Hair loss can be the result of heredity, hormonal changes, medical conditions or a normal part of aging. Anyone can lose hair on their head, but it is more common in men. Baldness typically refers to excessive hair loss from your scalp. Hereditary hair loss with age is the most common cause of baldness.
Nearly 1 in 7 men between the ages of 18 and 30 start to experience thinning hair. For men 40 and older, that number jumps to 1 in 2. This is the result of hormonal changes that cause the hair follicle to shrink over time. Eventually, the hair follicle no longer can grow new hair.
The slow, but noticeable, thinning hair can take a toll on how we perceive ourselves. We can start to look at ourselves in the mirror and no longer like who we see, and now our self-esteem is lowered. Our confidence takes a hit, and we feel as if we can not do what we used to do.
When it comes to men's hair loss, there's a handy tool known as the Ludwig-Savin Scale or Ludwig Scale that can assist in determining the stage of hair loss. This chart provides a visual representation of the hair loss process.
In the case of male pattern baldness, the initial signs are often a receding hairline that becomes more pronounced over time in the temporal regions. The recession is initially subtle, but as time goes on, the hairline moves further back.
Thinning hair at the crown of the head is another symptom of male pattern baldness. Unfortunately, this hair loss is often difficult to detect, as it's usually someone else who points it out, or you have to be paying close attention to notice it.
The hair loss at the top of the head will eventually spread outwards, merging with the receding hairline until partial baldness is achieved. If not addressed early, the hair follicles on the side of the head can die off completely, resulting in permanent hair loss. That is why we aim to help prevent this outcome here at Mind & Body Performance.
